President Donald Trump signed a landmark law to phase down potent greenhouse gases used in air conditioning during his first term. Now, his administration wants to unwind the measure, meaning companies could keep selling the polluting ACs for longer.
The Environmental Protection Agency said the proposed change is in response to a shortage of climate-friendly refrigerants needed to comply with the law, which raised prices for the products for contractors by as much as five times and left some Americans without AC at the height of summer. The agency is holding a public hearing on Monday before finalizing the rule change, and a spokesperson confirmed the hearing would continue despite the government shutdown.
