US Banking Sector Set for Major Consolidation, According to Bob Diamond
Bob Diamond, the Founding Partner and CEO of Atlas Merchant Capital and former CEO of Barclays, forecasts significant consolidation in the US banking sector. He predicts that mergers and acquisitions (M&A) will result in the acquisition of over 3,000 banks within the next two to three years as regulatory bodies support this trend.
Currently, the United States has approximately 4,500 banks. Diamond estimates that this number could shrink dramatically to between 1,000 and 1,500 banks in the coming years. “We think that there’s going to be consolidation that takes that number of 4,500 to something closer to 1,000 or 1,500 literally over the next 2 to 3 years,» he stated during an interview with Francine Lacqua on ‘Bloomberg: The Pulse’.
This anticipated shift in the banking landscape reflects broader changes in the financial services industry, as institutions seek to enhance efficiency and competitiveness. As regulators embrace consolidation, stakeholders in the banking sector are preparing for a transformative period ahead.
