Polls have opened in a by-election that threatens to lay bare the fracturing of British politics, pitting Nigel Farage’s populist Reform UK party against the Welsh nationalists of Plaid Cymru, with Keir Starmer’s Labour vying to keep a seat they’ve always held.

The special election for the Caerphilly seat in the Welsh assembly — known as the Senedd — sees Reform candidate Llyr Powell facing off against Lindsay Whittle of the pro-independence Plaid Cymru. Labour’s Richard Tunnicliffe is also seeking to retain the seat. Polls close at 10 p.m.
