This renewed push for diplomacy follows the reinstatement of United Nations sanctions against Iran, which were triggered by the expiration of previous agreements.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that reaching a new deal remains the most favorable outcome for Iran. He warned that in the absence of an agreement, it is imperative for nations to promptly enforce sanctions. The UN had previously denied a request to prolong the deadline for these sanctions, resulting in the reactivation of penalties that were previously lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal effective early Sunday in Tehran.
