US personal spending last month topped forecasts, illustrating consumers are generating momentum for the world’s largest economy and so far undaunted by stubborn inflation and high interest rates.
The August gain in household spending suggests third-quarter growth may approach 4%, based on the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta’s latest GDPNow estimate. Second-quarter gross domestic product was marked higher in revisions this week as well.
